Well the focus of this week was recovery. I have not done this low of a weekly mileage in a long time. It was not the intention at all. In fact, when I had planned this week out, I had planned for a run on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. The runs were not going to be high mileage, but just some miles to shake out the legs and stay in the game. My next marathon is October 22nd and before that I still have 2 half marathons, a 5k, a 10k and a 3.8 miles trail race. The month of October is looking insane for me. Just insane!
Since I was back on the road, I decided to get my first post marathon run in on Wednesday. I had panned to get to a local park in Ohio, but due to time, etc I ended up on the treadmill. I was actually completely okay with this as I set it on a nice easy pace and it ended up being a great first post marathon run. Much better than one expected. I was pleased with how it went and it made me think the recovery week would be a good one!
On Friday morning I had to return my rental car for the week, so I decided just to run home. Overall the run went pretty well except for when I was going a bit too fast (below 10/mile). I only had time for 2.3 miles as I had to get home and jump on a conference call, but again, I was pretty happy with this run. Well, I noticed throughout the day my right hamstring was feeling a little unhappy. I’m thinking I tweaked it at football, but didn’t notice it until Friday. On Saturday morning, I slept in and decided to go for an easy 5 miles. Well, about a mile into the run I could really feel that hamstring barking at me. It was throwing off my gait and just unpleasant. So instead of pushing and doing something stupid, I stopped my run at 3.5 miles and have no regrets. It’s better to sit and rest than do anything this early in the Fall.
Wednesday: 2.5 miles, 28:33, 11:25/mile (treadmill)
Thursday: Flag Football!
Friday: 2.3 miles, 24:44, 10:45/mile
Saturday: 3.5 miles, 40:08, 11:29/mile
Total Miles: 8.3 miles
For once I had a Friday night off and had plans to go to the Pirates game with Mar! She was in town visiting family and the wonderful Kristy gave us her tickets since she was off racing in Rhode Island and New Hampshire over the weekend (thanks again!!!). It was fun catching up with Mar, but it was also just nice to feel like I had a normal weekend. I usually put in about 20-25 hours of work over the weekend at my PT job, so it was nice to relax and have a life. Sometime pretty late in the game, someone came up to our seats and was like, “I follow your blog!!” I was stunned and so happy. It turned out to be Monica and I was so happy she saw me and said hi! She was out to the game with her husband celebrating her birthday. It’s times like that when I love my blog for what it is and so happy that it allows me to meet so many amazing people.
The other highlight of the week though was the start of flag football. It actually started last week, but with the marathon less then 48 hours after the game, I decided to not play and start this week. It was great being back out on the field. This is my 6th, maybe 7th year of glad football and the team I play with is just great. We typically play both spring and Fall, but due to all of my races, I took off from the spring season. I was pretty bummed, but the schedule didn’t work out. Moving to Thursday night games this Fall helps. So far we are 2-0 and looking good! Let’s hope that streak continues. We haven’t won a championship in 3-4 seasons.
