Last week was a bit of a mystery to me. I saw some lows and by Thursday’s run was actually pretty frustrated with things. Don’t get me wrong, I still am, but something seemed to happen over the weekend that gave me at least a temporary confidence boost. I would say for the past 7 weeks or so, I’ve actually been putting in the miles and the workouts. I know nothing happens overnight and I am not expecting that, but I would think I’d feel at least a little better over this time. I’m not. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. I just feel so sluggish and slow. I feel that I am so dependent on my walk breaks and not in a good way.
It’s just down right frustrating. When Timehop reminds me of a run I did around this time last year, it reminds me that I had speed and was about 2 minutes faster last year. I just have felt that I am getting no where and feeling defeated and not feeling great as I go into my next marathon cycle in two weeks. A lot of people have said I just need to rest, but mentally that’s hard for me to do. I am feeling that I am going into this next cycle well below where I need to be so the idea of straight up rest makes me feel like I will go in with even more of a handicap. I know rest is good, but I just don’t want to go into this cycle down any further.

The highlights of last week were certainly my weekend runs. My week day runs just honestly sucked. I did 2 of the 3 on the treadmill, which I hate, but I am glad I have that opportunity now, especially with the heat that has been so bad. I did get in my 2 weight sessions for the 4th week in a row. I know it’s not a ton, but I’ve come to enjoy those sessions. Soon, I’d like to add in a 3rd session.
So, my weekend runs. I’m actually not sure where any of the miles came from. I thought I would go out for 10 miles on Saturday morning and then I basically said forget it, I’ll be happy with 4. When I finished and saw that 10:47 average I was a little surprised. I really didn’t understand it. Then on Sunday morning, I headed downtown to hit the last Open Streets Pittsburgh. The route this month was from Market Square to Lawrenceville. I ended up doing 6 of the 7 possible miles and again when I finished was shocked to see the lower speed. I felt it though and did hit a wall about mile 5. The one nice thing about these 2 runs is that I took no walk breaks until that last mile on Sunday.
My other weekend fun was that I volunteered at the Liberty Mile race on Friday evening. I’ve been wanting to do more of that and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity. I had no business of trying to put up any speed, so instead, I watched all the speed come in at the finish line. Some of the times put up by everyone were just amazing. The other fun I had was playing some bocce on Saturday night. The Frick was hosting a Bourbon and Bocce night and let’s just say I was better at drinking the bourbon than I was playing bocce.
