Last week was my first really awesome week of training in some time. I seemed to follow that up with another solid week, but perhaps looking back, I probably did a bit too much too quickly. When I tend to jump back into things, I tend to go all in. Sometimes that’s good and sometimes that’s bad. In this case, I do think it was a little of both. For the first time in a long while, I finally do feel like running is back where it needs to be in my life. It’s slowly coming to the front burner. I’ve had it on the back burner for far too long.
I’ve said for basically ever, I need to get back into lifting and add in more cross training. I had a 7-day pass to a LA Fitness that was given to me from a friend and I wanted to take advantage of it as much as I could. Since, I am still on my July run streak, had to make sure I was getting that in today. As suspected this week, I only did a quick 1 mile on Monday and Friday to keep the streak going. In this past week, I was able to get there 3 times and got in more gym workouts than I had all year. I am setting a goal now for doing 2 weight workouts a week. I don’t really have a plan, so if anyone has something they’d like to suggest, I am all ears. I do bette following something than just going rogue.
Monday: 1 mile, 11:12 + 30 m Elliptical
Tuesday: 4 miles, 46:28, 11:37/mile + 30m Lifting
Wednesday: 5 miles, 58:58, 11:48/mile
Thursday: 3 miles, 37:03, 12:21/mile + 30m Lifting & 40m Elliptical
Friday: 1 mile, 12:10
Saturday: 8 miles, 1:40:00, 12:30/mile
Sunday: 4 miles, 46:47, 11:42/mile
Total Miles: 26 miles
As you can see from the miles, they weren’t fast this week. I think I had an average over the 26 miles at 12:01/mile. Nothing fast at all. I’m struggling mentally now with seeing such slow splits. My split from my long run last week was deplorable and to see another slow long run this week is pretty gut wrenching. I’m so slow and it’s a big mental punch in the gut. Time hop comes up and reminds me how this time last year I was doing double digit runs sometimes sub 10/minute miles and now I can’t even run 1 mile under 10 minutes. It’s pretty damn depressing. That’s for sure. I have to tell myself though that 1) it’s summer, so I am going to be slower but 2) I am doing a lot for the first time in a long time and my body is pretty fatigued.
I’ll be pulling back a little for this upcoming week since I am running Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Remix this weekend. Not that I am racing it, but my legs were like lead from about Thursday on, so I want to try and have semi-useful legs for the weekend. I’ve been so slow already, so let’s not just add to that. I have about 5 more weeks to get my base under my feet before I start marathon training. I am certainly not trying to do a 5-6 month trainig cycle as that’s just crazy, but I also want to be able to run at least 10 miles confidently before it starts. I typically like about 14-16 weeks of training as a sweet spot for me, but that’s only if I have the right base. And right now, I still have a bit to go on that.
