I took the beginning of the week off last week as a nice little rest from the Pittsburgh Marathon half. Since my hamstring was so cranky, I thought this would be a good time to take that rest as well. I probably should have taken more time off, but I did enjoy the few days of rest. Really I took the extra time to finish packing for my little vacation at the end of the week. Since I would be out of work Wednesday to Friday, I ended up putting a few more hours at work. Even when I took to the road for some miles, they were pretty easy and very low mileage. I certainly was not pushing anything.
My Thursday run was probably the easiest of them all. I had a long day of travel down to St. George’s Island for Rock by the Sea that I was in bed pretty early on Wednesday evening. When my alarm went off at 7am on Thursday, I was up and ready to go. I headed East on the island and just did an easy out and back. It was also a great way to see the island and all of the beautiful houses! I was actually shocked to that there was a pretty nice bike path that went down both sides of the island. Not that there is heavy traffic on the island, but that was nice to have for most of my miles.
Thursday: 4.1 miles, 46:12, 11:16/mile
Friday: 3.1 miles, 33:43, 10:53/mile + 14 bike miles
Saturday: 3 miles, 33:14, 11:05/mile
Total Miles: 10.2 miles
On Friday, I headed toward to the west side of the island. I truly wanted to try and see as much as I could of the island on foot. Somehow I ended up having a decent negative split run with my miles at 11:14, 11:09 and 10:23. At the very end of the my run, I was seeing some 9:20’s on there and for how slow I have been lately, that was nice to see. Later that day, Nikki and I ended up renting some stellar beach cruiser bikes and hit the bike path to explore more of the island. I am not a beach person, so for me, this was an awesome way to spend the afternoon. I ended up with just over 14 miles on the bike. I probably would have gotten more in, but ended up not going into the state park since I didn’t have cash on me for the admission.
My Saturday run was basically down the old bridge and back. When they built the new bridge to SGI, they left a pier on both sides that became a nice fishing pier. I wanted to run the actual bridge, but it’s 4 mile and I did not need that type of mileage. Next year though I am totally running that bridge! I’ll do it the first morning though because very morning my runs started later and later. I almost didn’t run on Saturday but I really just wanted to see how long that fishing pier was. It ended up being .65 miles long one way. From the house we stayed out it was a perfect 3 mile round trip to the end and back. Even though I didn’t do a ton of miles last week, it was nice to have some relaxing miles and no pressure behind them. Maybe this little reset is what I needed? We’ll see!
The best part of the week though was Rock by the Sea! I’ve known about it for years and for the pats 2-3 years, friends have tried to get me to go but I couldn’t make it work. This year I made sure I was there! It was such a low key music event and was perfect for the soul! I had 4 nights with amazing artists and created so many new memories with friends. Being on the island was relaxing. No, I don’t like the beach, but just being down there was 100% relaxing. I’m definitely planning on going back next year!
