Here’s the reality of my marathon training right now. It’s actually going well, but I don’t think it’ll stay this way. I feel that the paces and effort of the two weeks are a complete fluke. Things are on fire right now, but I don’t think it’ll last. A lot of these feelings have to do with my confidence when it comes to running and a general lack there of really. I think that wall will come once the distance starts adding up. I’ve seen this happen before where I have a really good training cycle and then come race day, I completely bonk. While I hope that doesn’t happen, I am being realistic and not keeping my hopes up that these weeks just aren’t a fluke.
With that being said though, week 6 was SOLID! I am still very much all over the place with my paces and not sure I will actually figure out what is my easy pace, recovery pace, tempo pace and even race pace. I’ve been trying to run a little blind and go by feel and while something might feel easy, I am complete stunned when I look at my watch and see the paces are well below what I thought I was running. Tuesday easy 6 was way too fast. I was out in the Philadelphia area for work and found some neighborhoods to circle by the hotel. There were maybe 2 street lights the entire time. Maybe it was the lack of light that made me run fast, but the 10:22 average was just too fast.
For my tempo run, I headed out to one of the neighborhoods I had found on Tuesday that had a nice 1.2 mile loop. I only had 2.5 miles at tempo with a mile of warm up and cool down. The loop was perfect for this run. It was essentially a mile exactly to and from the hotel. I pushed pretty hard on those miles and hit 9:10, 9:00 and 8:50. I missed my second cross training workout due to some personal matters and traveling back home from work, but sometimes you just have to prioritize things and training wasn’t one of the priorities on Thursday and Friday.
Monday: 30m Elliptical + 30m weights
Tuesday: 6 miles, 1:02:13, 10:22/mile
Wednesday: 4.5 miles, 44:54, 9:59/mile
Thursday: Rest – Work Travel
Saturday: 16 miles, 2:2:57:28, 11:07/mile
Sunday: 3 miles, 33:48, 11:17/mile
Total Miles: 29.5 miles
Saturday’s long run was another surprise. I met up with Coach Jeff and ran with the SCRR group again. There were not a lot of runners in the slower paces, so for the most part Jeff and I were on our own. He did his best that I reigned in the pace, but I was all over the place. The first miles were pretty fast and I thought I lost it in the middle ones, but I was able to hold on for the most part. Crazy enough, my average pace was 11:07 which I do believe is my fastest 15+ mile run ever. The route was great as we saw some back miles of the marathon course, the downhill of Liberty and the up of Forbes.
It was certainly a fast week and I am still running some low mileage and seem to be hovering around 30 miles a week. Compared to past plans, this is lower mileage than I am used to. I am still loving only running 4 days a week. While I might be running less, the runs are more quality and my overall monthly mileage is still around 100 miles both from January and now for February. I still need to work on consistently getting in the second day of cross training still. Even though I am 6 weeks into this plan, there is sill lots to work on, but hopefully plenty of time to work on it.
