I really liked last week. Like, really liked it! I put up a few more miles than last week, but it was the pace for most of the runs that I liked the most. I haven’t seen average paces like this in awhile. The best part though is for the most part the miles felt good to! I haven’t changed anything that I can think of, so I am not sure where these are coming from.
As I mentioned in last week’s recap I was goaling myself at 3 runs with 1 extra as a plus. I did get 4 solid runs in and was happy about that. Well, Wednesday morning was questionable on solid, but I got the miles in. It was the first real cold run for me and I only had the morning to get the miles in, so I did what I had to. I actually had to break out the pants, long sleeves, gloves and hat. Even by the end of my run, I don’t think the legs were actually fully warmed up. Thankfully I was back to my after work runs on Thursday evening. Now that we’ve had the time change though, those evening runs will be in the dark. Time to officially get all of the safety equipment out as it’ll be used pretty much for every run now.
Even though I had the EQT 10 Miler on Sunday, I wanted some solid shake out miles on Saturday morning. I saw that the SCRR group was doing a run with the elites, so I decided to join them for 3 miles. I ran a mile down, did the 3 mile loop and 1 mile back to the Northside. It wasn’t so much that I ran with the elites, but I got a chance to chat with a few of the guys and they were very nice. It again was a brisk morning and I almost wish that the race had been then. The conditions were certainly looking to be better. The miles felt great and they gave me the goal for the race on Sunday. My two half marathons the past weekends were around an 11:39 pace. For the 10 miler, I wanted to be around 11:30. I thought it would be a stretch, but that is what I wanted to go for.
Monday: 30 mins elliptical + 30 mins weights
Tuesday: Rest – Happy Halloween!
Wednesday: 3 miles, 36:13, 12:04/mile
Thursday: 4.1 miles, 45:35, 11:07/mile
Saturday: 5 miles, 56:23, 11:17/mile
Sunday: EQT 10 Miler, 1:52:07
Total Miles: 22.1 miles
I went into Sunday’s race feeling pretty good. Actually, it was the best I had felt before going into a race in a long time. I actually felt confident. Maybe it was knowing I only had 10 miles and not 13.1, but there was definitely a difference in my mental state. Of course, I’ll put out a full race recap, but spoiler alert here… the race was amazing! It wasn’t a PR and my splits were a little all over the place, but my average was an 11:13 which was well below that 11:30 I set as my goal! I definitely left it out there and was happy to see that my last 2 miles, specifically my last mile, was my fastest mile of the race.
That race certainly helped with my mental state. I went in feeling great and left feeling even better. Here’s the best part. That was officially the first long run of my new marathon training. I mentioned briefly I was pushing back my 9th marathon and I found it. I am going to be doing the Jekyll Island Marathon in January. This gives me 12 weeks, which I think is enough time. I hope this cycle goes better and right now I feel already I am a better place mentally, so here’s to hoping!
