Happy Friday everyone! I have another edition of Five Things Friday for you guys. If you’re a reader of my blog you know that I am trying to do a half and a full in every state. This means a lot of travel for races. At this point, it’s pretty easy for me to pack for a race because I do it so often. While what I bring to race in might differ because of weather and location of the race, there are 5 things that never are ignored and I thought I’d share them out wth everyone.
1 – The first thing that always goes into my bag is an extra pair of underwear. Even if I am only traveling for 1 night, I usually pack about 4-5 pairs. You just never know! I mean, remember my fiasco with American Airlines in January? I did pack 5 pairs for 2 nights and still ran out because of that! My mom always said to wear clean underwear and I take it heart. Plus, they usually don’t take up much space, so nothing lost there.
2 – Not too long after a race, I am usually back in the car headed home or on my way to the airport to sit in a plane for a few hours. Before that happens I like to get a good stretch and/or roll in. When space allows (usually longer trips that I am taking my roller-board suitcase on) I’ll pack my travel foam roller. Otherwise, I always bring my Stick and Moji massager with me. I am not afraid to be that person in the airport whipping out the stick to roll my quads. Nope. Not at all. Just be careful with The Stick because TSA sometimes doesn’t like it. If that happens, you just have to remind them it’s not a weapon, it’s completely plastic and they should get over themselves. Okay, maybe not the last because you probably want to actually board you plane, but really, The Stick can be carried on any flight.
3 – Who actually likes paying $3 for airport water? If you answer yes, then let’s talk because I want to understand how you have that much expendable cash. Well, I hate it and get so frustrated when I forget to pack my water bottle and am forced to do this. I still forget a water bottle every once in awhile, but typically this is an absolutely staple. Not only are you saving money from buying water bottles, you’re also being green and saving the early from all of those plastic bottles you’d probably not be recycling anyways.
4 – Who has gotten to their hotel, pulled out their race stuff and then realized your Garmin was maybe only at 40% battery? It sucks, right? Well, one the first things you should always throw in your back is your watch charger. When you are getting ready for bed at night, this is a perfect time to put the watch not he charger to make sure you are all juiced up for the mornings race. I know many people run watchless, but I like to have my watch as a back up just in case my chip timing doesn’t work and I need to prove I actually did the race (oh yea that happened to me).
5 – One of the last things I throw in are snacks. I hate paying prices for airport food, so it’s nice to have some granola bars or something in my bag at all times. You could hit traffic, airport delays or who knows what that you could then delay you from a meal. These snacks come in handy. I never leave home without them!
