Last week was a crazy fast week. Not only in how it flew by, but in how fast I ran my miles. While I hope that it means I am slowly getting stronger and faster, I fear it was most likely a fluke. I love seeing these types of runs and the splits, but I never trust that it’s here stay. I never believe in myself that I am actually making progress with my training. Last week marked 5 weeks into Pittsburgh Marathon with only 11 more to go. I think the true test of training always comes when the long runs build up though. The question will be how can I handle the build up of miles.
When I headed out for my easy run on Tuesday, I really thought I was taking it easy. The last mile was a little tough, but when I stopped my watch, I was beyond shocked at the pace I had put down. When it was time for the tempo run on Wednesday, I took to the river trail so I could have some fast, flat ground. Based on the pace from Tuesday, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get to some lower paces for my tempo miles. It was only 4 miles which meant 1 warm up, 2 tempo and 1 cool down. I again shocked myself when I saw that my tempo miles were 9:36 and 9:16. I definitely was feeling it, but it felt great! There is something about some short distance speed that I just love.

Total Miles: 25.1 miles
I ended out the week by running my 57th overall half marathon in my 35th state. I had picked the Saints & Sinners half marathon for my NV half and was more than thrilled that I did. The race recap will be up within 2 weeks, but as a quick recap, it was a fantastic race! I knew it was a downhill race, but I didn’t realize how screaming downhill. We basically 6.5 miles of downhill to 4 miles of flat and then the rest as a more gentle downhill. While I might actually be in better shape, the downhill certainly played a part in my finish time. I finished only 2:43 from my half marathon PR and put up my 2nd fastest half marathon time. For the third time last week, I was shocked, but this time it came with crushed quads.
Since I was out in the Vegas area for 2 nights for that half marathon, I decided to play tourist on Friday. I had never been to the Hoover Dam so I took the chance to head out and did the full dam tour. I also love learning about stuff like that, so I really enjoyed the tour. In the afternoon, I got a chance to meet George in person and he took us out to Red Rock Canyon. It was a quick visit there, but it was gorgeous! I certainly would love to get back to the area and do some more visits around the area. While I hate the Strip in Vegas, I certainly could enjoy visiting more of the parks in that area. I certainly would love to get back there and do more in the area.
