I’m really not sure I could even call last week, the last week for St Jude training, as a training week. As you can see below, I did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING except for race. And let me tell you.. doing nothing the week before a big race like this sucked! I had planned to do an easy 2 miles on Wednesday and Friday, but friends talked me out of it (thank you) saying it won’t help me at this point but could hurt me worse.
All week, I dealt with some knee pain. It started after the Turkey Trot 5k and I probably made it worse with my miles on Saturday and Sunday. All last week, I kept taking Ibuprofen, was wearing a compression knee sleeve and icing as much as I could as well. By using my Dr. Cool compression wrap, I actually was able to ice it more at work and during the day than I thought I would. Needless to say though, I think these 5 days of no running hurt me worse mentally than physically.
Thursday: Rest – Flew to Memphis
Saturday: St. Jude Marathon, 5:08:16
Sunday: Rest – Flew Home
Total Miles: 26.2 miles
The big news of the week though of course was the race itself! There will be a full race recap to come, but I was pretty darn happy with the results of the race itself. I pushed myself pretty hard and attacked the game plan I set for myself. Of course though that last 10k was a fun beast to tackle and I could have let it slip more, so I am proud that I was able to hold into it as best as I could. There were some great moments and definitely some low, but the job got done. I walked away with an almost 31 minute PR!! Now I will give my knee some time to heal and do about a week of nothing and rest before getting ready for the next round of training!!
