Today’s long run was slated to be 8 miles. The plan was to meet up Coach Jeff and then join Steff while she finished off her 18 mile run. She had a 6 mile loop to do and I would just do 2 miles before I started with them.
Upon waking up Sunday morning, I realized it was pouring & based on radar had no plans on stopping. I even thought it would be a good morning for a treadmill run. I pretty much wanted to stay curled up on the couch and not move. Instead, I made a cup of hot tea and a bowl of oatmeal and slowly got myself together for the run. I knew Steff was already out there for 12 miles, so I couldn’t complain about just running 8 in the miles.
I got to Millvale Riverfront Park around 9:40am, laced up the shoes and set out to run 2 miles before starting the 6 mile loop. No one else was there! Everyone else seemed to be scared off by the rain.
Right as I started my 2 miles, Jeff was coming in, so I told him my plan. I knew from the Three Rivers Rowing Boathouse to the park entrance was a 1 mile loop. I wanted to stay close to the cars in case Steff came back. As I was finishing my second loop, I heard “CHELSEA!!!!!” coming from the trail and out came Steff! For finishing up 12 miles in the pouring rain, she looked like she was just finishing 2 miles.
After a quick sock change by Steff, Jeff finally emerged from his car and we quickly talked about the game plan. I didn’t know how my legs would feel after an 11-hr shift the day before at my PT job. On my feet for eleven hours and a long run didn’t seem to be a good combination. Jeff suggested we do a run/walk combo by walking for 60 seconds after every mile. I said sure! I felt super awful as I knew I would be slowing them down. No way could I keep up with those 2 speed demons!
After the first mile, I heard Steff’s watch beep and was not at all upset to do a little walking. I am sure I could have pounded out a continue run, but it would have been much uglier. I tried not to care much about pace and with the run/walk combo, but I knew I was going slow. Very slow. I tried to not worry about the watch and what it said.
The 6 mile loop we were suppose to do was from Millvale park to Heinz Field. We got to Heinz Field and well, Jeff and Steff kept going! Those little sneaks! She figured why not go for 20 miles since she felt so good!! I guess since I was 1/2 her total mileage, I didn’t have much room to complain. The 6 mile loop turned into 8 instead.
When we got to mile 9, I told Steff and Jeff to go ahead and finish the last mile strong. I plowed along and slowly got back to the boathouse parking lot. As I was closing in on the boathouse, I saw Jeff coming back to finish the run with me. I told him I wanted to tack on an extra .1 at the end so he came along with me.
Steff finished with 20 miles, Jeff got in 8 and I finished with 10.1 miles. To say we were all soaked through to the bone would probably be an understatement.
For the first time since April, I finished my first double digit run. My longest run since running the Kentucky Derby Half Marathon. I can’t believe I just had to type that. So horrible. I need to my game together.
After the run and drying off a bit, we met up with Kelsey and headed to Panera to chow down on everything! I got a Pick-2 with a cup of Broccoli Cheddar and the Bravo Turkey sandwich. It hit the spot!
We ended up hanging out for awhile talking about our 2015 races, Disney and even how we should up our own running store. Who knows… it could be coming to a street near you!
