I’ve never been that person who sets goals every new year. Well, I wasn’t until I started running. Now it’s nice to have goals and something to work on over the year. For the last few years, I’ve had the extra push on the goals because of the blog. Once I put the goals out, then it’s real and no turning back from them. As I saw in 2016, sometimes you don’t necessarily hit your goals, but that’s okay because it’s the big picture that matters in the end. So, with that being said, here are the running & fitness goals I am setting for myself for 2017.
1 – My first goal of the year is one I am carrying over from 2016 and that would be to run a sub-5 hour marathon. I feel like it’s there, but I can’t get it to happen yet. I’l be going for it at the Hall of Fame Marathon in April. I did this race last year and got my second fastest marathon time by accident. They changed up the course, but they’ve taken out a lot of the turns in the back end, so I am hoping that is the race. If not, I’ll pick another one in the Fall and go for it again.
2 – I want to run 1,400 miles in 2017. I know this might be lofty and just stupid since I didn’t hit my mileage goal in 2016, but might as well go for it. That comes out to I think 117 miles a month. Staying healthy will absolutely be key. Let’s just hope for that.
3 – Ever since I started the every week travel, my weight has gone up and my eating habits have gone down the tube. I do not see this travel stopping anytime soon, so I need to just figure it out. I’ve never been one to put weight loss as a goal like this, but I need to get it in check. Also, just because I am on the road doesn’t mean I should eat like I do. I think these two definitely go hand in hand, so if I get one in check, the other will hopefully happen.
4 – As I mentioned in my 2016 recap, most of my fitness last year was just running. I know that just sets you up for injury and really doesn’t balance anything. I failed on that lifting goal, so this year I am looking at it a different way. This year, I want to add in two days of cross training every week. This could be lifting, elliptical, hitting the bike or doing some of the Core de Force type classes I have been doing for the past 2 weeks. This will take some juggling of the schedule, but even if this means 2-a-days once or twice a week, I gotta make this work.
5 – Last year I got amazing new trail shoes. I put 7.1 miles on them. Yes. That’s it. So this year, I am setting a goal of getting 250 miles done on the trail. It’s time to get out of my comfort zone and just try something new.
6 – I need more states, so in 2017 I want to get a minimum of 10 states in this quest. I am not necessarily saying they have to be primarily in the half quest, but just as long as I get 10 new ones, I’ll be happy. That shouldn’t be too hard if my schedule works out. So far I have races scheduled in the following states: MS, LA, IA, WI and GA. I’ve been looking to add these states, so let’s hope that happens to hit this goal: WA, OR, UT, MO and NH. There are some other races planned, but they are repeat states to fulfill the other half of the goal.
7 – And last but not least, I want to give back more to the running community. I want to volunteer at some races whether helping with pack pick ups, water stations or expos. I am so grateful for every volunteer at the races that I do, that I need to give back and do the same. Yes, this is tough since I do race so much, but it doesn’t mean that I can’t volunteer even at some local 5k. Time to give back to all of the other local runners!
So that’s it. Some goals are lofty and some goals are absolutely doable. Right? Let’s hope! And no matter what happens, even if I miss a goal or two or even three, I always need to just give it my all and leave everything out there. No holding back in 2017.
