As an avid runner, I’ve come to learn that the recovery after the run is just as important, if not more, than the run itself. When I started out running, it would sometimes take a day or two after a long run to feel normal. Over time, I have learned new tricks for better recovery and have tried multiple tools to aid in this recovery as well. As my training started for my first marathon, I knew I would have to pay much more attention to recovery.
I was looking for a tool that I could easily travel with and use to pinpoint specific issues on my body, when I happened to see the Moji Mini PRO at a local running store. From first glance, this looked to be the answer to my problems. I was anxious to try this tool out so I contacted Moji to see if I could test it out and I am so glad they said YES!
The first thing I noticed about the Mini PRO is that it’s size is perfect to fit in my hand. Since my hands are on the smaller size, I thought they would just slip out every time I used it, but that wasn’t the case. Moji had of course thought this out and added an adjustable strap. There are three different sizes to adjust to.
Since the Mini PRO is only the size of your hand, it fits just about anywhere! If you really wanted to, you could fit it into a fuel belt, but I personally never tried that. Mine always stayed in an inside pouch of my gym bag. Unlike some other recovery tools, it is also TSA friendly. I travel quite a bit and during the past month had zero issues with it going through TSA security (trust me, it’s awkward when you have to pull out a recovery item and demonstrate what it really is and TSA is just staring at you blankly).
During a recent road trip with co-workers, I quickly grabbed my Mini PRO from my gym bag (yes, I always travel with my gym bag) and threw it in my purse. Of course, it fit perfectly in my smaller sized purse and since it weighs next to nothing, I didn’t even notice I had put it in there. I ended up driving the second leg of the trip, so while I got to hang out in the passenger seat, I pulled the Mini PRO and worked on some lower leg tightness. My co-workers were immensely confused and laughed at me, but I was just happy I could get in some massaging to my calf in such a tight area.
Another great feature of the Mini PRO is it’s flexibility so it goes wherever you direct your hand. Since the material is so flexible, it then also contours to the area you are massaging. At first I used this a lot on my calf and it was nice that I could massage all areas in one continuous motion. I felt that this really allowed for continuous pressure as well.
One of the best features about thought about the Mini PRO are the different sized spheres. There are seven total spheres with the biggest ones in the front and back (even then, they are not the same size). This allows for a really deep massage in a pinpointed area by easily pushing more into your fingers or wrist area. This is fantastic for really getting to those hard to reach places, which it might be tougher to foam roll. I was feeling some tightness on my neck and with the Mini PRO I was able to reach with the top sphere and work it out.
The one thing to keep in mind is that since it is easy to pinpoint the area you want to massage, it can get painful pretty quickly, especially the spheres are steel. One evening, I wasn’t paying attention and ended up causing some pain from the massage and that lasted into the morning. It just felt like getting a deep tissue massage with that feeling that lingers overnight.
Since I received the Mini PRO 3.5 weeks ago, this has quickly become a go-to and must have item in my gym bag. I’ve been using this almost daily since getting it and have yet to see any real wear and tear on it. I did spill some protein powder over it (whoops, I guess I thought it needed more strength, silly me) and all I did was rinse it and let it air dry and had no issues. If something does happen to your Mini PRO, Moji offers a 1-year warranty on the product.
I have fallen in love with the Mini PRO and I believe every runner should have one in their repertoire of recovery tools. The cost is less than $30. I’m so happy that I found this item and know this is going to help my recovery as I continue training for my first marathon. If you think the Mini PRO might not be enough for you though, check out their other recovery items.
