One of my goals for 2018 was to make sure I had at least one Five Things Friday post every month. Since I am about to do my first race of the year this weekend, I thought this would be a good time to post about my January post and give my top 5 pet peeves at races. There is always something at a race that makes me scratch my head and wonder why some runners do the things they do. Most of what gets me is truly just common sense on things not to do. When you’re out there on a race course, you just have to remember, you’re out there with a lot of other runner.
1 – My biggest pet peeve in a race is when people just stop right in front of you. This usually happens at a water stop, but sometimes it will happen right in the middle of the course. If you need to walk, which is completely fine, just be courteous and look around and signal. For those of you who don’t know, a simple hand in the air means you’re going to be stopping. I recommend throwing your hand up about 5-10 seconds before you actually want to walk. I’ve actually literally ran into people because they weren’t considerate of those runners around them when they stopped. No one wants to trip and go down, so just look around and then walk. It’s that easy.
2 – This might be the nastiest of the pet peeves, but please for the love of all runners out there, watch where you’re blowing your snot rocket! There is nothing fun about getting slammed by one. Nothing! Snot rockets happen. I get it. Just pull off to the side maybe and really make sure no one is around, especially if you’re in windy conditions. No one knows where that rocket might blow. Ew. Gross.
3 – I don’t hate headphones during during a race, but I can’t stand when runners have their music playing so loudly that they can’t hear runners nearby or officials directing them on the course. It’s not safe and you’re not potentially just hurting yourself, but you might be hurting others because of something happening that you don’t hear. Blast the music, but maybe not so loud or maybe one put one headphone in.
4 – Just because you’re running a race that might have roads that are shut down, does not mean that they become your personal trash receptacles. If you open your fuel and you’re not by a trash can, hold onto it until you are. There are always some type of trash can at the aid stations, so wait 1-3 miles and toss your trash then. There’s no need to litter while you’re running. This especially goes for trail running. In general, it’s always the curtesy to pack out what you pack in.
5 – Last but not least, is don’t go more than maybe 2 across in a race. I know it’s fun to run with friends, but if you go more than 2 across, it’s usually a nuisance for other runners to try and get around you. Enjoy time with your friends on the course, but just be cognizant of how your group might be blocking the course for other runners. I’ve been known to barrel through some runners if they won’t move over after politely being asked several times. Sorry. Not Sorry.
I know there might be other things that can be considered pet peeves, but these are my top 5.
Is there something that is a pet peeve of yours?
